Advocacy in Action

Description

A Legislative Primer to clarify and demystify the lawmaking process and how to effectively call our legislators to action.

This session will equip attendees with the information they need to understand how laws are passed and how to correctly contact legislators, give input and influence the legislative process.

Learning Objectives:

  • Educate attendees on how something goes from being an idea to a bill to a law and the part they play in the process.
  • Highlight key dates such as when the legislature is in session and when the Supreme Court is in session and key committees within the legislature that introduce legislation that impacts the HR Industry.
  • Equip attendees with strategies they can use to follow the legislative process including key websites for the House and Senate that allow them to monitor legislation that will impact their organization.

Handouts will be provided with resource materials for ongoing learning and integration of strategic principles and ideas.

Speaker: Cammie Scott, SPHR

Cammie Scott

Cammie Scott, SPHR is the President of CK Harp & Associates an organization headquartered in Springdale, AR.  CK Harp & Associates works with businesses to assist them in accomplishing their goals by enhancing benefit programs, improving employee morale and growing leadership teams.

Cammie is involved in various community programs and her church.  She has been recognized by various organizations for her expertise and is a frequent and entertaining speaker.

She lives in Lowell with her husband and 2 children.

Speaker: Denise Felber, CPA

Denise FelberDenise Felber has more than 30 years of experience serving clients including compliance reporting, integrated planning approach with other professional service providers and serving as partner in-charge of the technical resource group which tracks tax legislation and releases and develops presentations and articles regarding such matters.

Denise has published numerous articles and spoken on subjects including budgeting, the health care act and tax legislation.

Prior to joining HoganTaylor, Denise worked in national, regional and local CPA firms. She’s also served as a director of reporting for a national insurance company and controller of a manufacturing facility, both of which have provided her with a valuable client-centered perspective.

Speaker: Jill Pierce, Assurance Manager

Jill PiercePrior to joining HoganTaylor in January of 2006, Jill served as in-charge with S.F. Fiser & Company.  Jill has over eight years of experience in providing audit and accounting services to clients in the employee benefit industry.  She graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2004 with a B.S.B.A. degree in Accounting and Finance.  Jill devotes 100% of her professional efforts to serving employee benefit clients and managing the development of HoganTaylor's ERISA methodology. She monitors industry developments and maintains relations with regulatory agencies and industry leaders.  Jill is a member of the AICPA.  Jill also attends the annual AICPA's National Conference of Employee Benefit Plan Audits, as well as co-facilitates HoganTaylor's in-house ERISA training.

Speaker: Steve Schulte, SPHR

Steve SchulteSteven E. Schulte is principal at The Schulte Law Firm in Little Rock, Arkansas. His practice consists mainly of employment law, contract matters, estate planning, and general business law. Mr. Schulte graduated with honors from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Law, where he served on the UALR Law Review. Previously, Mr. Schulte received a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Central Arkansas and a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Arkansas.

Steve currently serves as the Governmental Affairs Director of the Arkansas SHRM State Council. Mr. Schulte has lifetime Certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources. He was selected as the Arkansas SHRM Professional of the Year and as the Central Arkansas Human Resource Association’s Outstanding Member. Mr. Schulte has served as State Director of the Arkansas Society for Human Resource Management; President of the Central Arkansas Human Resources Association; Arkansas Quality Award Examiner; Secretary of the Arkansas Institute of Industrial Engineering; Board Chair of the Central Arkansas Human Resources Association; and Board Member and Vice President of the Humane Society of Pulaski County.

Speaker: Thomas Dunlap, PHR

Thomas DunlapThomas Dunlap, PHR, is the Federal Legislative Affairs Director for the Arkansas Society for Human Resource Management (ARSHRM).  He formerly served on the NOARK Board of Directors in Legislative and Certification roles.  A former high school American history teacher, he unexpectedly grew interested in Human Resources while working part time at R.E.I, Inc.  After taking on larger management roles within R.E.I., Thomas entered the HR profession for good with his current job as the HR/Benefits Administrator for Benton County Arkansas.  Benton County’s experience with worksite wellness was recognized as a statewide Best Practice by ARSHRM, and led to Thomas joining the Health Reform conversation through features in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, L.A. Times, and the Washington Post.  A graduate of Southern Methodist University and the affiliated Tower Center for Political Studies, he will always be a lifelong student of the American form of government, particularly in how public policy shapes the HR profession.
